moles -
Moles is multi-media self-examination. This autobiographical
web narrative uses moles, the marks on my body, as a navigational
device. The moles are coordinates of a personal map, interconnected
narratives on different regions of my body. Through these narratives
I construct my gay identity.
The site has a clinical aesthetic look, typical of autopsy records,
x-rays, or other medical procedures that fragment the body as a
part of the diagnostic process. I treat the body as both a medical
entity as well as an intimate site to recall memories. By setting
up a tension between the personal nature of the story and the clinical
design of the site, I am commenting on how our notion of public
and private is continuously challenged by the increasingly technologized
environment in which we live.

| Statement
-
As a cultural producer and feminist,
what interests me is to make visible what is invisible in both political
and personal arenas.
Interested in new approaches to community collaborations, media
literacy, and youth produtions, I have found that personal narrative
can serve as a tool to break down stereotypes and visualize experiences
and perspectives that are not reflected in the art world or in our
society at large. Personal accounts of marginalized experiences
forcefully challenge both internal and external
assumptions about our access to power and our potential as artists
and agents of change. The challenge to write my own narrative was
inspired by my work with young artists, who I have asked to visualize
the difficulties, challenges, and insights of their own experience.
