About the Millenium
Art Diary -
GIGA invited you
to come back everyday, 365 days,
starting from the 1st of january 1999
until the 31st of december 1999.
...
this site is at some points
an interactive millennium art diary.
...
each day only one page was created.
each day only one page was uploaded.
sometimes it didn't work out and a few days are missing.
this site had the only purpose to set
a time-mark until the new millennium started.
the contents of the pages
are random and coincidental.
artwork, photos and text have been used
to give you a very individual view
of time as an artform.
...
"the millennium diary " a web based
art project,
was born beginning of 1999. giga set herself the target to do a
web installation
which should be limited to one year, the last year of the millennium.
no other year would have been so special. it was the hype before
the new millennium
that gave her the inspiration. starting with the 1.jan 99 ending
31.dec 99, one page
was designed and uploaded each day. even during her vaccation, she
managed to
upload the pages from a local internet cafe on koh samui, thailand.
the idea behind
the project was to present the viewer with a very personal, expressionistic
feel of time.
like in a traditional diary, each
day was recorded. pictures, poems, sound and
interactive elements were used to describe her day. she never knew
what the
next day had in stock, so each page is a reflection of her moods
and going ons.
sometimes she invited the viewer
to play, sometimes she kept the viewer out and
presented him/her with phrases or pictures without comments. it
was up to the
individual to deciver the message. when you browse through the millennium
diary,
you will find that days are missing,
starting from the middle of the year.
its the reflection of busy, indecisive times. even though pages
are missing,
it shows a certain invisible momento of time. giga even got e-mails
from regular
viewers to encourage her to continue her work or some did ask her
if she was
well and why pages were missing. it shows that also then the viewer
was
encouraged to be interactive although nothing specific was there.
the millennium diary project soon
cought the eye of online magazines.
it is also exhibited at MOWA (museum of web art) and is linked on
sites all over the world.
